PM orders inspection of Bangkok buildings

News

Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra today ordered safety inspections of all buildings in Bangkok.

Building owners who are found to have violated buidling regulations by adding additional floors to the original approved building design without a permit will face jail terms after four people died in collapsed building while fighting fire which broke off last Sunday.

Those who have modified their buildings should come forward and confess so we can resolve it, otherwise they face severe prosecution, Thaksin warned while attending a cabinet meeting in Chiang Rai province.

Thaksin said corruption is typical among building owners, contractors and city officials.

Interior Minister Bhokin Bhalakula said the owner had illegally allowed the mostly residential building to be used for business operations, including the storage of heavy equipment. Fire extinguishers were inadequate at the building, he added.
